I have experience working on breaking news, writing features and working on investigations. Here are a few examples of my work:
Teachers and U.S. Capitol insurrection
After the Jan. 21, 2021 U.S. Capitol insurrection, the L.A. Times wanted to see how teachers across all grades were talking about the attack. First, I did an audience callout to gather responses from teachers across the Southern California region. I then combed through dozens of responses to get together a narrative. I chose to take a listicle approach because the audience will know this will be a quick read, which is how online readers interact with stories. Read the story here

California dams investigation
I worked with the investigative team, in partnership with the Associated Press, to create an interactive graphic about dams in California and included an interactive map of all the dams in the state. The investigation looked at how many high-hazard dams are in poor condition. I went through the data and found high-risk dams in the Northern California region, pulled statistics from the data and highlighted areas that needed improvement. The investigation was in response to the Oroville Dam crisis of 2017. See the story here
Rental company investigationI worked with the investigative team to go through rental data from Sacramento County to create an interactive map and data visualization. The story looked at how one company impacted rent in Northern California and how it used shell companies while owning properties in the region. I combed through the data and found storylines that needed to be highlighted in the story. See the story here

Oroville Dam emergencyMore than 180,000 people were forced to evacuate when a spillway at Oroville Dam was near collapse. The breaking news broke on a Sunday afternoon and I was the only person on the digital team that day. I wrote the story, sent push alerts and shared it on social. As the story developed and new areas were being evacuated, I updated the story, sent the alerts and got the latest to the social audience. This story became the main source for updates the day evacuations were ordered. See the story here

California propositions guideIn 2016, California had 17 propositions on the ballot. I had the idea to break down the propositions – some of which were complicated – in 100 words or less. I also linked to previous stories and bipartisan websites so people can research the propositions themselves. I also created a way people can save their answers on their phones so they didn’t have to memorize their decisions when they got to the voting booth. See the story here

Manhunt in Mid-MissouriA suspect wanted for a triple murder and attempted murder was on the run in Mid-Missouri. I wrote the breaking news story and updated the story throughout the day. The newsroom was actually locked down during the manhunt because the suspect was believed to be in the area. See the story here
