Community
Outside of the newsroom, I have spoken on panels for professionals and students. I have visited classrooms -- ranging from high school to college -- and been involved in nonprofit work. Here are a few examples of my work in the community:
AAJA-LA Vice President of Career Development
As the VP of Career Development with the Asian American Journalist Association in L.A., I work to organize internships funded by the organization in Southern California newsrooms. Helping get young journalists experience in a professional newsroom will open doors from them that they didn't get before. I also work with the board to figure out what direction we should go with an initiative or how we can help the community. I love being part of the board because ensuring a future where newsrooms are made up of diverse employees only means good things for the audience.

L.A. Times Guild Steward and Unit Council Member
I am a steward and a unit council member of the L.A. Times union. I took on these positions because I wanted to be there for my colleagues and help them understand their labor rights and protections. When I first started in my career, I didn't know how to get my overtime or how to protect myself from unfair practices. As a leader in the union, I am able to help my colleagues make sure their rights are protected, answer questions they have and be there for them when they have a hard time. Read more about the union here.

AAJA Social Media Panel
Working with the president of Asian American Journalists Association-Sacramento, I organized, marketed and took part in a half-day workshop for nonprofits in the region to learn about social media strategy in January 2020. I brought the panelists together, planned a unique event for the chapter and got the word out. More than 70 people from dozens of area nonprofits attended the event. See the event page here.
AAJA Media Access Panel
I took part in a half-day workshop in December 2018 that was hosted by the Asian American Journalist Association-Sacramento for nonprofits to learn about media access. I was one of three panelists and talked about how organizations can pitch stories to newsrooms. During the event, I also connected with community leaders, building a relationship for future stories. See the event page here.
State Hornet Digital Academy
From 2017 to 2019, I was a mentor for the Sacramento State Digital Academy. For nearly 8 hours a day over a week, I taught college students about social media strategy in the context of news and helped them put together a multimedia story. See details on the academy here.
Journalists in Classrooms
During the Fall 2019 semester, I took part in a pilot program to teach two news literacy lessons for two different classes. The lessons had a structured curriculum that teaches students how to fact check stories. While following the lesson plan, I also provided insight from my work experience.

Classroom Visits
I have visited high school and college classes as a guest speaker to talk about working in news and being safe online -- particularly on social media. I also discussed my career path and answered any questions the students had. I did a 360-video demonstration during one of my visits. You can watch it here.
Women in Digital Media Poynter Leadership Academy
I was fortunate to be part of the 2019 winter cohort for the leadership program. I gained a better understanding of my leadership style, how to be a better leader and ways to really grow a team. I also connected with dozens of other women who I consider amazing friends but also as mentors as I continue to grow as a leader and journalist. See the cohort announcement here.
